    Background

   Childhood:
River was born deaf to a hearing mother named Scarlet and a deaf father named Alexander. She was born deaf because Scarlet had cytomegalovirus (CMV) when she was younger and it resurfaced during the pregnancy.

River was tested after she was born to check if she was deaf due to her mother having CMV. To their heartbreak, she was deaf and Scarlet blamed Alexander for their child’s deafness. This behavior was more due to Scarlet suffering from postpartum depression after giving birth so she indulged in self-pity and became neglectful of her child when she was young.

Soon, the two would argue often if their child should have a cochlear implant or not. Alexander doesn't see River as "broken" and "needing to be fixed" unlike Scarlet, who thought she'd be wouldn't fit in with other children and wouldn't need as much help as a hearing child.

After a long while, Alexander managed to convince his hearing wife that River was fine on how she is and that she can get an ASL interpreter for a while and a notebook to talk to others. During this time, the couple went to a doctor about Scarlett’s neglectful behavior to only found out about her postpartum depression and over time, found the right medication. Scarlet, realizing her past neglectful behavior, became overtime an overprotective mother and thinking she knows best for River.

The Hackett family soon moved to Moab, Utah as it was a smaller town than Salt Lake City. When River was 6 years old, she started 1st grade with a young ASL interpreter named Bridget Jonson.

Bridget was a controlling person who thought she could say better than the deaf child and purposefully interpret River incorrectly. She would sign correctly to only her parents on purpose so they wouldn't catch on what she's doing.

Bridget in her life started taking its toll when she felt scared of signing to anyone when her interpreter was near, she wished Bridget would just leave her life. Over the next two years, Bridget continued to consciously sign wrong to her and speak lies to her friends and teachers. One day, one of her closest friends told her on how she hears Bridget says differently on what River signed to her very often. She believes her friend's words and is upset over the fact on what Bridget has been doing for years.

River wanted payback for the years of being lied to by an adult so she stole her mother's precious diamond earrings that morning. She shoved the earrings into Bridget's purse when she wasn't looking. That night when Scarlet couldn't find her earrings, she signed to her daughter where her earrings were at and River fibbed by signing on how Bridget came into her mother's jewelry box and stole the earrings.

At first, Scarlet thought she was lying until confronting Bridget about the missing earrings. Bridget showed her the bag to only be surprised to find the earrings and this made Scarlet furious on how her own daughter's interrupter tried to steal her precious earrings from her. Bridget tried to explain how she never has seen those earrings in her life but Scarlet was having none of it and fired her on the spot.

River was glad at this to have such a person out of her life and hair. She didn't get another interpreter for a few years till River was 12 as her parents didn't trust another one and worried for their daughter.

   Adolescence:

When she reached middle school, her school life wasn't as grand as she was hoping for.

She went to a public middle school in her town.

River would get bullied verbally, with some pushing and name-calling, for being deaf by some children. She tried to inform her teachers but they would just sign to her, “It's just horseplay, you're just misinterpreting them.”

The bullying kept happening until an older student named Audra, who knew basic ASL, saw what was going on. Audra was in the swimming club and often got in fights off school grounds. Some part of her felt bad for the kid and offered to teach her out to fight after school.

River was hesitant and poor with fighting at first but got the hang of it a month of practice. River even got inspired to want to start swimming because of Audra.

She beat the shit out of her bullies and got in trouble for fighting. She had detention for a week but no one messed with her for once. River loved the feeling of power, or at least what she thought was power was in her eyes.

She starts 8th grade well with being more social with others but sometimes getting into fights off school grounds.

Her world would change in less than five minutes.

That night, a home invader broke into her home to rob her family. Her father awoke at the loud noises and snuck out of the room, grabbing an aluminum bat along the way. Young 14-year-old River couldn't sleep that night and be staring at the empty darkness of the hallway. She saw her dad creep downstairs and was curious why. She climbed out of bed and followed him from a distance.

When she got downstairs, River saw her father about to hit a masked man with a bat with nails sticking out of the sides. She couldn't help but make a loud distressed noise.

The home invader heard her and quickly turned around in a panic.

The intruder swung the bat at her father's face hard. He stumbled backward as the intruder kept bashing his face in over and over again till her father stopped moving.

River saw his head caved open as she felt a few chunks of brain matter splatter onto her.

The young teen began shaking and sobbing loudly before the home invader fled in a hurry. Her mother had awoken by her daughter's crying as she quickly ran downstairs, assuming the worst happened.

Scarlet saw her shivering daughter staring at the corpse and rushed to her daughter to hold her in a close embrace.

The home invader was long gone but quickly caught the next day.

He was arrested but the deep trauma was still left fresh in the mind of River.

During the rest of that year, she became a recluse and withdrawn from others as she didn't want anyone near her. She began more bitter and had no outlet for her anger so she only got worse as the year went on. She never had felt a true connection to her father because of her and but was still traumatized overseeing his gorey demise.

Scarlet, who was dealing with her grief much better than her child, picked up on this behavior and thought the best thing for her was a change of scenery.

After her 8th grade school year ended, her mom sent River to a swimming camp. The young teen was hesitant about this but eventually agreed on going.

At her time at the camp, River begins to get fairly decent at swimming and even better than half of the other children there which really boosts her ego. During her time swimming one day, another girl younger than her and River got in a petty filled argument that made River enraged. She dunked her head underneath the water for an uncomfortable amount of time.

The only thing that stopped River's murder attempt was a naive camp counselor getting her to stop being so “rough with horseplay”. River let loose on the nearly drowned girl who quickly swam away from her in a fright.

She didn't care that she hurt her but wanted more of this horrible, empowering feeling again.

A few years pass since her time at the camp for her to improve her swimming to be on her high school's swimming team. During these short years, her desire for more attention and power about others made her care much more about her reputation enough to heavily improve her socializing skills and mannerisms as the school’s preppy and sporty girl who helps others.

Deep down, she most despised most of her classmates and wanted to hurt them.

So she did whenever she could. Spreading rumors and lies of how a person she didn't like has “mistreated” or “bullied” her. People believed her as she used her cognitive deafness to seem more helpless than she really was.

Some days, she'd get angry at certain individuals at school she deemed “too on her case” and target them enough to invite them over for the evening to her home. At her home, she'd spike their tea with a lot of melatonin but place sugar cubes in as well to hide the taste of melatonin.

She'd drag their drugged bodies to her basement, bonded, blindfolded, and gagged them before her sadistic fun to begin to truly feel empowered over someone.

At the end of her ”fun time”, she'd get the still drugged and sometimes bleeding victim to her truck and dump their still living bodies at the edge of town to usually be found by a passerby.

The victim doesn't recall much of the night before due to how much melatonin was in their tea. River is talked to by police but can't prove she did anything so she is dropped from the suspect list.

She loves the horrible trill of nearly getting caught but getting away with her crimes by the skin of her teeth and the powering feeling of seeing her victim come back to school trying to recover the damage she caused to them.

She won't stop anytime soon.
